Arrius Senior Member Spain. You don't say it in English, you say it in French when speaking or writing English, like nom de plume , cherchez la femme , faute de mieux etc. It is neither outdated nor corny and probably occurs mostly in history books along with Lebensraum, Realpolitik, junta, bordereau and risorgimento, all to be found also in English dictionaries.

However, "reason for being" is used, too. It changes the register a little bit. Plain English.
Agreed that it is used in AE as well, but only in an academic or fairly intellectual type of discussion. It would sound very phony or effete. It doesn't mean that it's not suitable. I agree that historians or philosophers may use it but they have buddies too don't they? In history we see coup d'etat fait accompli and they are used because the English doesn't have the same register.
I wouldn't talk about raison d'etre in the supermarket though lol. In response to budicat if you say 'at the core of our existence' it could equally be viewed strange by uneducated people so in other words use if you have to!
