February 28, So hot that over 25 squillion people stayed up well after midnight to watch Dennis "Upside Down Specs" Taylor defeat Steve "Nugget" Davis on the final black in the final frame of the World Championship. So hot that it wasn't just the referee that wore gloves - the players needed to wear 'em as well.
Asbestos ones, to protect their dainty hands from the hot hot heat of the snooker table. The big money tournaments in those days were few and far between - the Worlds, the UK Championship and the Masters - so the top players would take pecuniary advantage of the unfathomable popularity of their sport by travelling up and down the country playing exhibition matches for baying, top dollar paying punters. Canadian stars Cliff Thorburn, Kirk Stevens and Bill Werbeniuk were three of the more exotic snooker conquistadors and proved to be popular on the exhibition circuit. They were mostly firm friends and would often travel around together, showing off their silky skills at remote outposts from Aviemore to Zennor.
I shan't go into details of how I come to be in possession of Bill Werbeniuk's diaries.
- Sam and Tom (Love to Read Book 1).
- Lénigme du retour (Littérature Française) (French Edition).
- Complete Electronics Self-Teaching Guide with Projects?
- Becoming Mrs. Hooverman.
- NYTimes.com Site Map.
- Accompagnement socioconstructiviste: Pour sapproprier une réforme en éducation (Collection Education intervention) (French Edition)?
Such things are not important. But, for reasons that I cannot divulge, I can confidently assert that they are the genuine article.
They are a fascinating read, for snooker aficionados or for psychology students with an interest in the inner turmoil experienced by well seasoned sportsmen. There are several entries from February which seem to come from a strange, uncharted place, far beyond the familiar realm of the sportsman's journal and it is these entries I include excerpts from below. It is obvious by my name that there is relation here. Catherine is my Grandmother. The story written by my Uncle, tells the story using her personal diaries which she kept basically her whole life. I recall nights staying over with her, every evening her jotting down the days events along with the days weather stats. I never new if this was habit, or if she was purposely logging her life for future generations to have access to the history of her life and family.
All in all, many of these pages reflect stories I heard as a child when spending weekends with Grandma. But there are many I never had the chance to hear. Due to the time and effort of my Uncle I am now hearing these for a first time.
It is adventure traveling back in time, living through history in my Grandmothers eyes. It is pretty exciting, as well as bringing back memories of the time I had spent with her. It brings a smile to my face. This is just a small part of her diaries, she had many, many books with notes of her daily activities and happening. I am looking forward to the next book and the many that will be possible after that.
