As for 'double-double', it refers to double cream and double sugar in one's coffee order especially at Tim Horton's. We pronounce the letter Z as 'Zed' over here? Does anyone else do this? In that case, I was taught the alphabet with 'Zed', but children nowadays are taught phonetically.

Naturally, I prefer the way I was taught. Although I had no idea what it's called in Britain, we do know it's 'Zee' in America, and as we watched American Sesame Street as children we learned early on of the double nature of this letter why, it's practically the Severus Snape of the alphabet. However, kids nowadays watch Canadian Sesame Street so I have no idea what they're learning to call it! I pronounce zebra as 'zee-bra', but I've recently heard it pronounced as 'zeb-ra' rhymes with Debra on T.

Is this a common pronunciation in parts of the world? Is there a Canadian Sesame Street? Did not know that! I just got back to the States and hit the Magic Button. There was no way I could stay awake long enough to read posts! Missed you all and hope you had a great New Year's Eve! LOL I say Zee-bra! It's like Nevada too. I pronounce it "ne-vaaaa-da", my dad says 'ne vad- a" and he also says 'lav - a" in stead of "La - va". Drives me crazy! LOL How do people in Nevada say it? Ohh Sheila, you have to tell us all about it! Did you take a picture of the trolley at King's Cross?

Is it still there? I am a math teacher, true, but, fom everything I know about syllables, even Denise's "vcull" is 2 syllables. You are the expert though, so we will leave it to you to research it for us! EDIT: OK, I was thinking about this and I remember one way to count syllables is to count vowel sounds so not necessarily actual vowels, just vowel sounds.

In vcull, there are two vowel sounds: v vee, so e sound and cull so u sound. Is this valid, soli, or did I just make that up? Can't wait to hear about your trip! When our British friends who live near Leicester were visiting us they went in Draco's room and admired his "zeb-ras," which of course we call "zee-bras. I could ask Draco about counting syllables.

I know he does a lot of that with his reading teacher, and sometimes when he is trying to spell something he'll start clapping. He got a Franklin speller for Christmas to use at home he already has one at school. Girl Scouts are spending the night. They just made breakfast tacos. My kitchen is a mess. We are going to sell them to the other troop leaders in the morning at the cookie booth lottery. I pronounce it ne-vaaaa-da", my dad says 'ne vad- a" and he also says 'lav - a" in stead of "La - va".

Z is zee. B is bee. The bees and birds add up to Edit: Holly, how do you pronounce Leicester? I lived in London at the start of my teaching career, from to So as an American living in England, I had to "learn" English all over again! Here are jut some of the things I learned: the complete list would be e-x-t-e-n-s-i-v-e! Leicester Square - Lester not Lie-cester or Lay-cester 5. Buckingham Palace - Bucking-um not Bucking-Ham 6. Birmingham - Birming-um not Birming-Ham 8. Edited to add: Can a British Forumer please explain to me why someone from Newcastle area I think that's the right area is said to have a 'Geordie' accent?

Yes, kids not wanting to wear their coats, jackets, gloves, hats, etc. Never mind all the things left outside at the end of recess. My mom would send me back to school to retrieve a forgotten scarf or hat, so how parents miss whole jackets is just unfathomable to me! When I was in the office making photocopies the other day, the day it was 14? F , all the recess staff were in a meeting debating what clothing was appropriate for certain temperatures, and when and if it was okay for kids to take off their jackets after they'd been running around for a bit.

They came up with a list of temperatures from 50? It was a spirited and lively discussion, much to my surprise. People asked questions like, What exactly passes for a jacket? Does a thick hoodie count? What if the kid is wearing lots of layers? Is it healthy for a kid whose been running around in a thick coat or layers to be get overheated while outside?

Who knew there was that much and more to say about dressing appropriately for outside recess? Healing charms get well charms Happy Birthday to all that are celebrating.

That said, your dad's right sorry. Emphasis is on the -vad, with the "a" like in "cat" or "bag". My understanding of the grammatical rule it that when you have a vowel in this case the "a" followed by a consenant and then an "e", the "e" makes the first vowel "say it's name", or in other words it makes a long vowel sound. Therefore, according to this rule, vase should rhyme with face. This is something my 4th and 5th grade students find out everyday whenever they write, both familiar ones and those they've never heard of before.

When spelling unfamiliar words, one strategy kids in our school are taught when attempting these new spellings is to use a word they know that sounds like the word in question. Hence the word 'habbitchewilly' for 'habitually', something I came across in an essay this week.

When I asked the 4th grader to explain this spelling, I was told, "Habbit is like rabbit, chew is like with your mouth, and 'illy' is like silly. Now, if she understood exactly how adding the suffixes -ual and -ually affect the meaning of a word, she might have not made that error. Alas, earwax! Yet another thing to teach in an upcoming grammar and spelling lesson! But I liked her reasoning anyway; and the fact that she knew how to use the word well in a sentence. Came home to crazy - Littlest Guy has been throwing up since am - every hour on the hour.

How does a stomach tell time? I am glad he is a doing it now and not while we were gone. Poor kid. He is awful snuggly when he feels bad though.

I am way behind on a week of hugs!! England was awesome! It was so much fun and so amazing to see it all in person. We ate in pub's and nice restaurants. I ate a pastie and loved it! I need to go check on Little Guy and make sure he is keeping the little bit of ice I just gave him down okay. See ya - She We rode in a double decker bus, and a cab, and the tube.

I got online to check my e-mail so I can work on my troop booth schedule and dh keeps asking me to come help him in the yard. I go out and hold something or measure something and then come back in. Perhaps he will get the hint soon. It is 75 degrees and sunny here today--beautiful weather for working in the yard, I guess, if you are into that. Healing and get well charms to all who need them. Happy New Year to everyone! Happy belated birthday to everyone I missed. Etc, etc, etc On the pronounciation front, I remember my first semester in French class racking my brain to figure out what day-twah was Now just don't get me started on my pronounciation of crepes.

My hubby is always picking on my for attempting the French accent on that word Hmmm with vehicle, I'm not sure about 1 syllable. On the "VEE" which is how I say it , I could see an argument for 2 syllables, though I'm pretty sure it would techinically still have 3 if you clapped it out Pesky, I've never been to Harvey's but there is one in Sarnia, just about 20 min from my parents' house in Port Huron. Back when I was 19 and 20, I tried on an occasion or two to get my DD to stop-but, no go which is a bummer as said driver was typically hubby, before he was hubby-and his last name being Harvey I was soo happy when they came to the US, specifically Michigan.

I was very upset when they stopped teaching French and started teaching SPanish. Who asked the double-double question? Because it is also perfectly logical for coffee here in Michigan, as well. In fact, its how I take mine, for the most part some places over-brew and I need more sugar Port Huron, where I am from, but no longer live but had to drive to this day got another 4 inches or so on the second, with white-out conditions most of the day.

By the time I got there, the snow had stopped, but the roads were still a little messy. Well, very messy but I'm well versed in driving in the snow and had very little trouble with it. We also had sub-zero windchills Wednesday night, Thursday, and Friday, but it is supposed to get up to the 50's next week. I love Michigan.. The reason why I had to drive up there in spite of the bad weather and my dad telling me not to , is that on NYE, my grandmother went into the emergency room, because she had fainted.

Lately, my grandma hasn't been eating well, and after checking her head and chest throughout the day on the 1st, they figured it was just dehydration, but because she had had some cramping, they did an investigation I'm not sure what test it was She had a blood clot, so they did exploratory surgery, which was a big risk, but without she would die for sure. It was too late.

The blood clot was simply the biggest in a series that must have been going on for several days, if not weeks, and her digestive tract was shot. Even if they had caught it in the ER, it would have been too late. So, they kept her on a ventilator until everyone who could get to Michigan got here to say goodbye, and she passed away early Thursday morning.

Its hard, but at least I did get to say goodbye. She hasn't been the same without him-now they're together again. Ok, Alex is sleeping, which means I should be too. Hope everyone is doing well. ETA: Yay, kabloink! Another forumer who understand the joys of Tim Horton's! You must try Harvey's if the occasion ever arises. I asked about 'double-double' coffee as well. Neat, so it's not only a Canadian thing. EDIT: So sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Her memories will help you through this difficult time. You'll be in my thoughts. Azi, I think kabloink! Lots of French, letter 'zed', Canadian references and a few extra characters. There's this one grey bear who may or may not be a polar bear. I still haven't figured it out. You will be in my thoughts. He already knew that was a no-no! LOL His mom had no idea!

LOL Some people pronounce it ne-vah-da "a" as in "wash" or "fall" , but that always sounds to me like someone trying to sound "upper clahss" LOL I see it the other way around! LOL Down south most people say Ne-vah-da. My dad's from Washington state so, he says it different! Every country has different pronounciations as do basically every region in ever country! LOL I'm glad it's my first language! I'd hate to have to learn English. Let's not forget spellings either! Don't get me started either! LOL Crepe is not 'crayp' as in crepe paper, it's 'cr ep'!

LOL Sorry to hear about your grandma, Kabloink! Hope Littlest guy is feeling better soon! Sounds like yall had a fun trip! You sure went a lot of places! More Healing Charms sent your little guy's way. Last day before going back to the zoo school here. It is a 'flat' cake, filled with frangipane and in which are hidden two "beans". The porcelaine ones may be very cute, some people actually collect them I have kept the Hagrid and Dobby ones I once found of course! If you find one of the "beans" in your piece of cake, you're the king or queen of the day.

Which comes with obligations: you have to buy the next "galette", or the bottle to drink with the next one. People tend to "draw the kings" "tirer les rois" several times in January. I love traditions. Weather Charms to California! Audrey Edit: Tori: "Don't ya just love the English language?! Too true about pronounciations! But grammar, and pronounciation, these are no piece of cake! LOL Nah Said, here, "crep" also the "e" is very short.

It's been a while, but I did have a year of linguistics and a quarter of History of the English Language in college. I gave the information I knew to be correct at the time I studied it. Then again, the English language has changed dramatically over the centuries. Language is rather like a living thing that grows and changes to accommodate the times.

Josephine, we got a lot of wind I am not sure how we were missed. Areas north and south of us were pummeled pretty heavily with rain, and the higher elevations received plenty of snow. I think Journeymom saw a lot more extreme weather than we did here. The thing about the English language is, there are sooo many exceptions to the rules of its pronunciation and spelling Potteraholic, I tell my kids that, while it is important to learn the spelling and pronunciation rules since they generally apply and at least provide some sort of starting place , there is sure to be an exception to practically every single one!

I should imagine that there are even more people without power in other counties. Several thousand lost power here in Kern County yesterday, and all we had was wind. Kabloink, I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Now, please enjoy your Epiphany Day and don't think about tomorrow. BTW, what is frangipane? Instead of an Epiphany Day, I will be preparing for the week and getting back into "teacher mode. Now, I must waste my Sunday doing it.

I spent today doing laundry, taking down my Christmas tree no wisecracks, please , organizing and putting away ornaments, cleaning the house, and--thanks to the removal of the tree--rearranging furniture. Oh, my aching back! All that wind created a great deal of dirt, and my dog tracked a lot of debris into the house.

But a clean house does make me more willing to do the other work. Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone! I need to call her today and make sure her daughter made it home safely. We had high winds yesterday, about 30 miles an hour with gusts to This morning we have a soft snow falling, but no wind thank goodness. We have about two inches so far. I'm not sure how much we're supposed to get but the mountains are expecting a couple feet of snow. Thank you for the birthday wishes. The family took me out to a hibachi restaurant where we stuffed ourselves and then had a Pirates of the Caribbean ice cream cake at home.

I got a Broncos jersey, a Target gift card, and a new cell phone! The battery in my old one was dying and I thought Mr. E was being a cheapskate in not getting me a new one. He said he got worried when he saw how the battery was degrading so quickly and hoped it would last till the third. I was having to charge it every night and even then it would barely hold a charge all day.

I have to play around with the new one to see what it can do. It's one of the Chocolate ones from Verizon, light blue. Healing charms to your little guy. I didn't know they taught languages other than English in it! Well, I'm all packed to go back to uni. Mixed feelings, because while I'll be glad to get away from my parents I'm going back to a cold house!

I also have a lot of work to do that I should have done over the holidays. Here it is, almost noon and we don't have one up or even remotely close to church time. It is sooooo weird. Our church changes meeting times each January to fit 3 congregations into our building so our service switched from starting at am to starting at 2 pm.

Next January, we switch yet again to am start time. There is going to be a lot of cranky, tired kids today mine included and I am anticipating a louder than normal service. I did restock the church quiet bag with new stuff so hopefully it will help out some. It is going to take a few weeks to adjust to this.

Kabloink My eldest heads back to campus tomorrow. It has been so nice having her home for more than just a three day weekend! Somehow time doesn't work normally for me while my husband and daughter are on Christmas break. All sorts of regular activities, including Internet posting, just sort of stop or slow down a great deal. I haven't been able to review all the messages, but I'm glad that Kabloink made her Christmas trek safely, and I'm sorry to hear of her grandmother's passing.

Also, healing charms to Sheila's boy. Trying to ease back into Regular Daily Life. Glad you got to see her. I was wondering how all of you California Forumers were doing with the bad weather. I talked to my sister she lives in Santa Ana last night and she said they'd had lots of rain and wind but no power problems. I think the storms were worse further north than where she lives, though. We are supposed to start undecorating the trees today. I took some of the decorations down already but I wanted to leave some things up until Epiphany.

Audrey, some people here do king's cakes, but usually for Mardi Gras instead of Epiphany. We're all back to school and work tomorrow, plus after-school activities. Of course Mondays are our second-busiest day of the week so we'll probably all be exhausted tomorrow night. Two weeks off has been nice. I quickly skimmed through the posts. SOn's room almost has everything put away. I started on girls' room, but can't do much with Toddler awake, and can't get in there while she's napping to organize. Seeing the dilema? I need to work on the laundry and dishes which have piled up while I was moving bedrooms around.

Hopefully everything will be ready by next weekend so I can start taking down holiday decorations. My friend stopped by with her daughter, and I ordered 8 boxes of GS cookies. Where on earth did the vacation go? Of course, I was hospitalized for part of it. I'm better just in time to go back to work.

I'm sure the kids are going to be very unhappy to be back at school. They will have probably forgotten everything over the break, so the first two days back will be spent reviewing! I'm trying to enjoy my last 8 or 9 hours of freedom! Healing charms to anyone still needing them and weather shield charms to those of you in bad weather areas. Kabloink, so sorry about your grandmother. Healing charms to all who need them and weather charms for all in California and other areas having snow and cold. May you all have some lovely, Spring-like weather soon - OK, so it will probably be a couple more months, that's the best I can do.

I'll bet she did see some wind. Those Santa Anas are terrible. I hope she is not near any of the flooding and mudslides. All of the fires down in SoCal several weeks ago have really set up the area for some major problems in the hilly and wooded areas nearby. Please keep us posted. PatPat, when my students complain about having to come back to school, I remind them that the teachers are just as miserable as they are.

Somehow, that fact seems to perk them up a little! LOL Mine are going to be hit with some tests this week verbs and elements of plot and a benchmark which I detest next week. With all the tests, it's hard to find time to teach. It's just the way things broke, unfortunately. I didn't even start wearing a jacket until December.

Summer is a loooooooooooong, hot season here in the Central Valley--we had degree temps in April last year and the year before--and I really do savour the cool weather for as long as it lasts Okay, everyone
